Namibian Pietersite formed through a rare natural process where parts of the original rock were dissolved and later filled with silica. During this transformation, fibrous crocidolite developed within the chalcedony, creating its signature shimmering effect similar to Tiger’s Eye.

Because the silica filled the initial rock variably, fibers were developed in different directions. This is what gives Pietersite its distinctive swirling, storm-like flash.

While both Chinese and Namibian Pietersite contain these chatoyant fibers, much of the Chinese material has altered more heavily into iron oxides, which can reduce shimmer and create duller, reddish, jasper-like areas. Namibian Pietersite is valued for its better-preserved fibers, stronger flash, richer contrast, and greater depth.
