What is Green Moonstone?

“Green Moonstone” is a trade name for soft green feldspar material, likely related to microcline — the same feldspar family as Amazonite. Although it is sometimes incorrectly sold as “Garnierite,” Garnierite is actually a general term for nickel-bearing green minerals and should not be used unless testing confirms that identification.

Although this material belongs to the feldspar family, it is not the classic Moonstone in the traditional gemmological sense. True Moonstone is defined by its soft adularescent glow, created when light scatters between thin feldspar layers usually orthoclase and albite.

Green Moonstone isn't minerologically considered a moonstone due to differences in its internal structure. It is usually appreciated more for its gentle sheen and green colour.

The green colour may come from trace elements and structural features within the feldspar. Its soft green tones and occasional pinkish blush make each piece visually unique, while the trade name “Green Moonstone” reflects its appearance rather than a formal mineral species.
