What is Iolite Sunstone?

Iolite Sunstone, also known as Bloodshot Iolite, is a relatively rare variety of iolite containing natural reflective platelet inclusions. These platelets are usually hematite, an iron oxide mineral that catches sunlight from within the stone and creates the glittering optical effect known as aventurescence.

This material can display deep violet-blue, smoky, reddish, and greenish tones depending on the angle of light. The green colouration is likely caused by amphibole inclusions, possibly actinolite, while the red sparkle is created by hematite platelets suspended within the iolite.

Iolite is also strongly pleochroic, meaning its colour can shift as the crystal is turned. This is why the stone may appear darker, brighter, greener, or more violet-blue from different directions.

The glittering “sunstone” effect is directional and needs to be viewed from the correct angle in strong light. When angled properly, the hematite platelets reflect light like tiny mirrors, creating a natural sparkle within the iolite.
