Libyan Desert Glass likely has a cosmic origin, though its exact impact site hasn’t been found. One interesting theory suggests a meteorite hit a shallow sea at high angle, and large fragments of the meteorite carrying sand were propelled outward by powerful jets of vaporized seawater, falling again to form multiple smaller craters instead of a single large one, which may have eroded over 29 million years. This glass is also thought to be an impactite rather than a tektite, despite often being marketed as the latter.
