Often referred to as Hedenbergite Quartz, these striking dark olive to nearly black quartz crystals from Inner Mongolia owe their colour to iron-rich actinolite (ferro-actinolite), according to 2024  research, rather than hedenbergite as previously believed.

“Hedenbergite quartz” has been marketed as a more affordable alternative to Seriphos Green Quartz from Greece, research dating back to 2018 indicate that the green colouration in those specimens is also caused by actinolite inclusions—not hedenbergite.

However, the Inner Mongolian material contains a higher iron concentration, giving it a much deeper, more intense tone, with some crystals appearing almost black.
