What is Ametrine?

Ametrine is a rare variety of quartz that naturally combines both amethyst and citrine within the same crystal. Its distinctive purple and golden-yellow colour zoning forms when iron within the quartz is exposed to different temperatures during crystal growth, creating separate zones of amethyst and citrine.

High-quality Ametrine is prized for its strong colour contrast, exceptional clarity, and well-defined zoning. Rather than blending together, the finest specimens display clear transitions between the purple and golden regions, making each piece a unique natural work of art.

Most of the world's natural Ametrine comes from the Anahí Mine in Bolivia, one of the few known deposits capable of producing gem-quality material with distinct amethyst and citrine colouration. Due to the specific geological conditions required for its formation, natural Ametrine is considerably rarer than either amethyst or citrine alone.

When carved into a sphere, the crystal's colour zoning can be appreciated from every angle, revealing shifting patterns of gold, violet, and crystal-clear quartz as the sphere is rotated.
