Why Manifesting Doesn’t Work: The Problem With Manifestation Techniques

Manifestation techniques and coaches often lead people away from real change & truth

Why Manifestation Techniques Often Don’t Work

Many people try manifestation techniques such as visualisation, affirmations, scripting, or “acting as if” through the Law of Attraction. While these techniques can sometimes produce results, many people eventually feel frustrated because they don’t work consistently.

In my experience, manifestation techniques often fail because they focus only on the method rather than the deeper foundation of creation.

Generally, when people try to manifest, the mind becomes tense and controlling. This creates resistance rather than flow.

True creation seems to arise more naturally from a place of trust, self-love, and connection to the Creator. When we understand the unconditional love of God and release our attachment to outcomes, life often begins to unfold more naturally.

Ironically, this is when many of our desires begin to manifest without forcing them.

Key Questions on Manifestation

Why do manifestation techniques sometimes work?

Sometimes manifestation techniques appear to work because the person eventually lets go of attachment to the outcome. But when desires are manifested purely through technique, the result is not always what we imagined. What we once believed would make us happy can later turn out to bring disappointment, difficulty, or a sense of emptiness.

Do visualisation and affirmations help manifestation?

They can support focus and intention, but without self-love and trust in the Creator they often don’t lead to lasting fulfilment.

Is manifesting (creating our reality), the purpose of life?

In my experience, the deeper purpose of life is awakening to our connection with the Creator rather than manifesting material outcomes.

“Manifestation” Keeps us Trapped in the Illusion

I actually feel the intense focus on manifestation diverts us from the truth and keeps us trapped in this dream, illusionary world. The point of life is not about manifestation at all and when we realise this, our desires just naturally manifest. Some won’t materialise, but it doesn’t matter at all when you realise the truth.

This blog explains my personal experience and thought process on why I don’t think the current state of manifestation industry (yes, it is a huge commercial industry) doesn’t work, and I personally don’t like it because I believe it stops people from truly awakening. And it also made me question why some manifestation coaches charge thousands of dollars for courses that promise to teach these techniques.

I Knew About Manifestation As a Child

Since I was a small child—long before I knew anything about “manifesting,” the “law of attraction,” the “law of assumption,” or any of the other popular laws—I remember lying in bed with a deep, aching sense of knowing that life could change in the ways you truly wanted, no matter what the circumstances were.

At the same time, I also remember feeling incredibly frustrated. Even though I knew this was possible, I had no idea how it worked. It felt as though I had once known the method, long ago, but had somehow forgotten it.

The Manifestation Techniques & Results

As I got older, I eventually stumbled into the world of manifestation — Abraham Hicks, The Secret, Think and Grow Rich, and countless other books, teachers, and techniques. The whole industry around “creating your reality.”

And to be fair, some of it seemed to work. I did manifest certain things through visualisation, affirmations, and the practice of pretending something had already happened.

But the pattern was strange.

The things I “manifested” almost always seemed to appear only after I had completely given up on them or forgotten about them altogether. Sometimes they never appeared at all. And many of the things I did manage to manifest eventually turned out to bring more misery than joy.

Over time I grew tired of manifestation coaches, gurus, and the endless techniques that were supposed to be the secret. Because deep down, I knew this wasn’t it.

What Must We Realise First to Manifest?

Now I realise that what must come first is experience — truly understanding the nature of our Creator, God, Source (whatever name you prefer), as unconditional love.

When you begin to understand that our Creator is this unfathomable compassion and unconditional love, something changes. You develop a deep and unshakable trust in God.

At that point, no techniques are required. There is simply a quiet knowing that our Creator is love itself.

From that place of trust, your relationship with desire also changes. You may still have desires — things that would be nice if they manifested — but whether they do or not no longer feels so important. The attachment begins to dissolve.

Much of our confusion comes from how we have been conditioned by the God portrayed in many religions — a God who punishes, judges, and behaves in ways that almost resemble a kind of divine unpredictability.

In many ways, religions have done a great disservice to the true nature of our Creator.

The God I experience is nothing like that. The God I experience is the warmest light — a presence that dissolves sorrow, guilt, and resentment. The God I know softens even the hardest hearts through compassion and love.

One of the biggest problems is that we just don’t trust that God loves us unconditionally and that we must perform good deeds to earn his love. (I use the masculine form He/Him here because it’s just what we are used to)

So how does one begin to experience this unconditional love of God?

By practicing unconditional self-love.

I have written many blogs about this already, so I won’t repeat everything here. But when we can truly acknowledge, accept, understand, and feel compassion for ourselves, something profound happens. We begin to feel that same compassion for others — and we begin to recognise it flowing from God as well.

This was not an easy process for me. It took a long time to truly embody. But it is possible.

Manifesting in a Dream World

Through this deeper understanding of the true nature of God, new insights began to arise — or perhaps I simply started to understand more clearly the insights I had already received.

Last year, in 2025, I repeatedly experienced a strange sensation that life is a dream. It happened most often while I was driving. I suspect it might be related to the brainwave state we enter when we are on autopilot, quietly focused but not actively thinking.

At first, the feeling unsettled me. I even wondered if something was wrong with me, because the experience felt incredibly ungrounding. It was as if everything and everyone in my life were part of a dream — dream characters moving through dream stories. Nothing seemed entirely solid or real.

I know that many traditions speak about life being a dream. Native American teachings mention it, and similar ideas appear in various spiritual traditions. But actually feeling it is a very different experience from simply hearing the concept.

Over time, I became more accustomed to these sensations. As the year went on, I gradually felt more grounded again — and I was relieved to realise that I was not developing some kind of mental disorder.

Then I came across a book called The Disappearance of the Universe. To be honest, the writing style wasn’t really my preference, so I mostly skimmed through it. But even from skimming it, I came across an idea that gave me a powerful insight and completely shifted how I saw the meaning of life and the nature of this reality.

The book suggests that God — our Creator — did not create this dualistic world. And if I’m being honest, when you really look at the suffering and chaos here, it often does feel more like a nightmare than a divine creation.

The idea presented in the book goes something like this: God loves to create. So God created a being like Himself — something that shared His creative nature. Because that being was like God, it also loved to create, and it created another being like itself. And so the process continued, with creation expanding through these emanations.

But at some point, one of these emanations had a thought: What would it be like to create something without the original Creator?

And with that thought, this universe of duality appeared.

Of course, it is actually impossible to create anything separate from the original Creator. So what formed instead was a universe built on illusion — a reality that appears to exist apart from God, yet has simply forgotten its source.

And so here we are.

Welcome to planet Earth.

Before reading this book, my belief was that God created this world of duality in order to experience Himself through contrast. At the time, this seemed like the most reasonable explanation to me, and it’s something I wrote about in my earlier blogs.

But there was always a question that lingered in my mind. If God knows everything and created everything, why would He need to understand Himself through duality — especially a form of duality that can be so painful and horrific?

Because of that question, the idea presented in The Disappearance of the Universe made more sense to me. It also aligned more closely with my own personal experiences.

The concept that this life is more like a dream — an illusion — a reality where we are creating without remembering God, resonated deeply with what I had been feeling.

This is why life on Earth can feel so painful. Most of us are not truly connected to our Creator. Many people don’t trust our Creator, and some don’t even believe He exists.

The difficulties and challenges of life often act as a redirection toward our Creator. Many people only call on God when they reach rock bottom — when they realise there is nothing left within their own power to change. But perhaps we don’t need to wait for suffering to bring us back to that connection.

Why Manifestation Techniques Don’t Work

Because of this disconnection with the true nature of God, it’s not surprising that many manifestation techniques — often sold by gurus for hundreds or even thousands of dollars — don’t work for a lot of people.

We are trying to manifest things without first understanding the true nature of creation, or the true nature of the Creator.

We create most naturally when we trust in the existence of our Creator, whose true nature is unconditional love.

But we must also remember that this world is like a dream. When we become deeply attached to the desires of this world, we become even more entangled in the dream itself. This is similar to what Buddhists speak about when they teach the importance of letting go of attachment to desire.

Personally, I think it is completely natural for humans to have desires. The issue is not the desire itself, but the attachment to it. We can desire things, but it is important not to become bound to the outcome.

Our purpose on this planet is not simply to manifest a materially successful life or to fulfil every personal desire. The deeper purpose of being here is to awaken — to realise that our Creator exists and that His true nature is unconditional love. Without experiencing that truth, it is very difficult to feel genuine fulfilment.

In many ways, this dream-like world seems to exist so that we can experience what it is like to live without remembering God. And now we know what that feels like. Sometimes it can be beautiful, but if we look honestly at the state of the world, it can also be deeply painful.

We have seen what it is like to live in a world that has forgotten God, or that holds distorted ideas about the nature of God.

So perhaps now it is time to wake up.

Life is not really about manifesting everything we want. It is about awakening from the dream and returning to our Creator. And when we begin to trust in that love, many things in life begin to unfold naturally, without forcing or techniques.

Why Manifestation Techniques Work for Some People

Some people do experience results from manifestation techniques like visualisation or affirmations. In my experience, this often happens when a person naturally lets go of attachment to the outcome. When that attachment disappears, the mind becomes relaxed and open, and life seems to flow more easily.

However, many manifestation teachings focus only on the technique itself rather than the deeper inner state of trust, self-love, and connection to the Creator. This difficult inner work is what we should be focusing on.

Manifesting with God – The Co-Creative Process

So what does this creation process actually look like in everyday life?

Once you have reached a place of self-love and have begun to understand the true nature of God as unconditional love (which is the hardest part) — the process becomes surprisingly simple.

[Read my blogs on my journey to self-love]

When I have a desire, I first acknowledge it honestly. For example, I might recognise that I want to be healthy.

Then I remind myself of the love that our Creator has for us. I allow myself to really feel that trust — the deep sense that God loves us unconditionally and cares for us. This connects and attunes us to God. Sometimes I have to ask myself the question “Do you trust God loves us?” then I answer “Ofcourse”.

From that place, I simply ask God to make me healthy.

There is no pretending that it has already happened. No forced gratitude for something that hasn’t occurred yet. No carefully structured sentences designed to “trick” the universe.

Just a simple, honest, and genuine request.

Then I reconnect with the love of God. In that moment I’m reminded that the true meaning of life is this connection to divine love, not the physical things we manifest in this world. And with that understanding, I simply carry on with my life.

Sometimes I find myself naturally visualising a warm pillar of vanilla-coloured light flowing down through me from above. I don’t try to force this image — it simply arises on its own. For me, it serves only as a gentle support to the process, not the method itself.

Interestingly, some things seem to manifest almost instantly, while others never appear at all. But in the end, it doesn’t really matter, because fulfilling every desire was never the true purpose of this life.

The real purpose is to live in connection with the love of our Creator — and to remember the love that He has always had for us.

Should You Discard Your Manifestation Techniques?

Visualisation and focused intention can definitely support manifestation. Crystals can absolutely be used to support your intention, But without a deeper foundation, these techniques & tools alone don’t bring true fulfilment. True alignment begins with self-love and a deep trust in the unconditional love of God.

This is also why I approach crystals differently. Rather than using them as tools to “force” manifestation, I see them as reminders of the unconditional love of the Creator.

With every crystal I sell, I set the intention that anyone who encounters it may feel unconditional self-love and the love our Creator has for us — so they may remember who they truly are and awaken, with grace, to the deeper truth of this world.

 It’s time to wake up.
