What is Red Capped “Super 7” Amethyst?

Red Capped Amethyst is a natural form of amethyst where purple quartz is coated or included with deep red iron-rich mineralisation, most commonly hematite. This creates the striking contrast between rich violet quartz and earthy red colouring across the crystal tips.

These red-capped Amethysts are often marketed as “Super 7” or even “Auralite 23,” but these names are frequently used loosely within the crystal industry. Rather than being a confirmed seven-mineral specimen, many so-called Super 7 Amethysts are more accurately understood as amethyst with iron-rich inclusions, coatings, or staining.

Amethyst commonly forms in iron-bearing environments, and its purple colour is linked to traces of iron within the quartz crystal structure. The red cap on this piece is a natural hematite-rich coating, giving the crystal its bold red surface colour and layered mineral appearance.

Sourced from Brazil, this specimen features multiple small secondary terminations and a beautiful contrast between purple quartz and red hematite. It is a striking example of natural mineral layering and a more transparent alternative to the often-misused “Super 7” trade name.
