Hollandite is a manganese oxide mineral that forms as black needle-like crystals in radiating sprays within quartz; it is considered uncommon in amethyst, as amethyst typically forms in iron-rich environments whereas the manganese-rich conditions required for hollandite are less common.

The smoky phantom formed during a pause in crystal growth, when natural radiation interacted with trace aluminum in the quartz structure, turning that layer brown before later growth sealed it inside as a visible shadow.
