What is Sugilite?

Sugilite is a rare mineral whose purple to violet colour is mainly caused by manganese, with iron also contributing to its colour. The dark areas in this specimen are braunite, a manganese-rich mineral that can have a metallic lustre. Sugilite and charoite can sometimes be confused, but they are different minerals with distinct crystal structures and compositions.
