What is Rosette Amethyst from India?

Rosette Amethyst is a descriptive name for amethyst crystals that grow in a rounded, flower-like formation. Rather than forming as a single point or flat cluster, these specimens are composed of many small amethyst crystals radiating outward, creating a sculptural rosette or blossom-like appearance.

Indian Rosette Amethyst is especially associated with the Kakamunurle / Kattumunnur Mines in Karur District, Tamil Nadu, a locality known for producing distinctive amethyst formations, including flower-like clusters, scepter crystals, fan-like aggregates, and richly coloured purple quartz.

The purple colour of amethyst comes from trace amounts of iron within the quartz that have been naturally altered over geological time. In rosette specimens, the colour can appear strongest toward the crystal tips or in growth zones, giving each piece beautiful depth and natural variation.

Some Indian specimens may also contain hematite or goethite inclusions, adding subtle reddish-brown, smoky, or earthy tones. Combined with the radiating crystal structure, these natural inclusions make each Rosette Amethyst a unique record of crystal growth.
