Truth About Rainbow Obsidian

Contrary to popular belief, Rainbow Obsidian’s colour is not caused by trapped bubbles. As molten lava flowed and cooled, microscopic mineral crystals formed and aligned within the glass in multiple layers. It’s not the type of mineral that matters most, but the size and spacing of those tiny aligned crystals. When light enters the stone, it reflects off the front and back of these ultra-thin layers. Some colours cancel each other out, while one colour becomes stronger and more vivid — creating that hidden flash of green, gold or violet that we love in Rainbow Obsidian. The better aligned and more evenly spaced the crystals are, the stronger and cleaner the colour band appears.
