This crystal point contains small brown, iron-oxide–like inclusions, and it is unclear whether these contribute to the smoky colour.

At the tip, some green tourmaline may have been partially replaced by pink lepidolite — suggested by the mica-like sheen in the pink areas. Pseudomorphs of this kind are known from Brazil, the locality of this piece. It is also possible that portions of the pink material are pink tourmaline.
