What is Phenakite?

Phenakite is a rare beryllium silicate mineral prized by collectors for its clarity, rarity, and natural crystal formations. Its name comes from the Greek word phenax, meaning "deceiver" or "impostor," as early mineralogists often mistook clear Phenakite for quartz due to their similar appearance.

Despite this resemblance, Phenakite is a distinct mineral and one of the harder gemstone minerals, ranking 7.5–8 on the Mohs hardness scale.

Phenakite with Biotite

Phenakite commonly occurs alongside biotite in highly evolved granitic pegmatites. As the pegmatite cools, biotite crystallises from the mineral-rich magma while rare elements such as beryllium become concentrated, allowing Phenakite crystals to form within the same geological environment.

The dark biotite inclusions within this specimen provide a fascinating glimpse into the geological processes that created it millions of years ago.
