What is Malachite?

Malachite is a vivid green copper carbonate mineral that forms in the oxidised zones of copper deposits. Its rich colour, natural banding, and rounded botryoidal patterns are created as copper-rich fluids deposit layers of Malachite over time.

Although Malachite is famously associated with localities such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Namibia, Morocco, and Russia, it also occurs in China, including copper-rich mining regions such as Guangdong and Hubei. Chinese Malachite specimens can display beautiful green colour, natural banding, and mineral associations with Azurite.

Malachite is relatively soft compared with quartz, so polished pieces should be handled gently and kept away from acids, harsh chemicals, and prolonged water exposure. Its striking colour and natural copper-rich formation make it one of the most recognisable and beloved green minerals.
