The Correct Use of Crystals

The Truth About Crystals

The one selenite sphere I unexpectedly held one day set me on a path to understand and learn what crystals are for. I briefly talk about this experience on my About Me page.

After my crystal journey began, life took me through an intense four-year spiritual journey. It was a journey of learning what it truly means to love myself, those around me, and the true nature of our one and only God—the Divine Creator.

Over the years, I explored many different forms of spirituality. As often happens when we explore spiritual teachings, I encountered ideas that initially sounded beautiful and true. But as my understanding of God deepened, I began to recognise that some of the teachings and teachers I had trusted were not what they appeared to be. There can be false teachings and false light—things that appear loving, enlightened and spiritual, but ultimately lead us away from the truth and from the true nature of God.

Despite this, one thing never changed: my intuition that crystals themselves were good.

I had certainly used them incorrectly. Out of ignorance, I followed teachings about crystals simply because other people had written or taught them. But eventually, I began to separate the crystal itself from the teachings that had been placed around it. I began to see crystals as part of the beauty of God's creation.

What Does the Bible Say About Crystals and Stones?

The Christian community can sometimes hastily reject crystals as evil or inherently connected to witchcraft. Yet when we actually look at Scripture, we find something very different.

Precious stones appear repeatedly throughout the Bible in connection with God's presence, beauty, holiness and glory.

The breastplate of the High Priest in Exodus 28 was made with twelve precious stones, each representing one of the twelve tribes of Israel. In Exodus 24:10, the elders of Israel saw beneath God's feet what appeared to be a pavement of sapphire stone (or lapis lazuli).

In Ezekiel 1:26, God's throne is described as having the appearance of sapphire. In Revelation 4:3–6, God's throne is surrounded by imagery of jasper, sardine stone and emerald, with a sea before the throne “like unto crystal.” And in Revelation 21, the foundations of the New Jerusalem are decorated with all manner of precious stones.

There is also a particularly fascinating passage in Ezekiel 28:13, which says of the figure in Eden:

“Every precious stone was thy covering…”

The passage names numerous precious stones, including sapphire, emerald, jasper and others. While the immediate context addresses the king of Tyre, the description of a figure in Eden who is an “anointed cherub” has traditionally been understood by many Christians as referring to Satan before his fall.

Under this traditional interpretation, Satan was originally a highly exalted and favoured heavenly being, adorned with precious stones by God. The stones themselves were not evil. They were part of the beauty with which God had adorned him. The corruption came through the being who turned away from God—not through the stones.

We also find Zechariah 3:9, where God speaks of a stone placed before Joshua the High Priest:

“See, the stone I have set in front of Joshua! There are seven eyes on that one stone, and I will engrave an inscription on it,” declares the LORD Almighty.

Some translations understand this as a stone with seven facets. Again, the stone appears within a sacred context involving God, the High Priest and the removal of iniquity.

Nowhere does Scripture describe crystals or gemstones as inherently evil.

Do Crystals Have Power Separate From God?

No.

This is where I believe the spiritual industry has gone wrong—and something I had fallen into myself.

Crystals in and of themselves are not powerful. Their power does not exist separately from God. I believe they carry a reflection of the frequency of God—the purity, beauty and order of His creation—and are meant to be used as tools to come closer to Him and be reminders of Him.

They can remind us of the beauty of God, the beauty of His consciousness, and His love. To me, they are gifts from God and part of His creation that can help us turn our hearts and minds toward Him.

But we should not give crystals the power that belongs to God alone.

This distinction is important because it is here that I believe crystals have been misrepresented and misused within parts of the spiritual industry.

Can Crystals Be Harmful?

Yes.

Crystals can be harmful because they do have the ability to act as doorways or portals to the spiritual realm. I wrote a little about this on my About Me page, but I want to explain it again here.

I know this from my own experience and also from testing crystals, as I have the ability to sense energy or the spirit to some extent. Scripture tells us to test every spirit because there are many false teachings and spirits in the world:

“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but test the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.”
— 1 John 4:1

So I began praying for discernment and wisdom while holding a crystal, and then again without holding one. Through this, I realised something that had not quite clicked for me before.

I felt sensations that I can only describe as entering a different dimension or entering the spiritual realm if I held the crystal in prayer.

I finally began to understand why, in the Book of Exodus, God commanded the use of crystals and precious stones in the making of the breastplate of judgment, which was part of the sacred garment worn by priests when coming before God for decision-making and ministry. I also began to understand why it was worn over the heart.

From my previous work with crystals, I had discovered through the sensations I experienced that wearing crystal pendants over the heart seemed to “activate” them. For some reason, their frequencies felt amplified when worn over the heart.

When crystals are used, especially when they are worn over the heart or held in the palms, they can open a spiritual door when you are intentionally using them to access the spiritual realm—for example, through manifestation, spells, crystal grids, or other spiritual practices.

But which door did you just open?

The spiritual realm is a mysterious place. If you are not rooted in God and protected by Jesus, you may be opening yourself to something deceptive. Scripture warns us that Lucifer comes as an angel of light.

Most of us carry unforgiveness in our hearts, much of which can be unconscious. This can make us vulnerable to deception in the spiritual realm. You may think you are gaining access to enlightenment, healing, wisdom or other beautiful things, but you most likely being deceived.

Even if you experience some benefit in the beginning, slowly but surely, once that door has been opened, you may find yourself experiencing what I now understand to be spiritual warfare.

For me, this manifested in many different areas of life. It can affect your physical wellbeing, motivation, relationships, pets, children, finances, mood—really, any aspect of your life. I experienced this myself, although at the time I didn't understand that what I was experiencing could be interpreted as spiritual warfare.

I thought I was simply going through a series of extremely challenging situations because I was “ascending”.

Thankfully, God eventually used these experiences to make me wiser, more discerning and closer to Him.

This can become a vicious cycle. When something goes wrong, you may seek out psychics, tarot readers, mediums or other spiritual practices to understand what is happening and try to fix it. You may experience some temporary benefit, but then find yourself taking one step forward and two steps backwards.

The problem is that these practices can lead you further into the spiritual realm, opening more doors and making you increasingly accessible to things you may not understand. And the cycle continues.

If you are involved in New Age spirituality, does it ever feel like you need another reading after the last one? Another retreat after the previous retreat? Another course, another spiritual tool, another crystal, another practice?

You keep searching for the next thing that will finally give you the answer, healing or peace you are looking for.

But perhaps the answer isn't another spiritual tool. You will never find it, no matter how enlightening or profound the next spiritual modality may sound. I spent decades trying to discover who I was through New Age and other spiritual practices, always searching for the next teaching, experience or modality that might finally give me the answers. Only God and Jesus gave me the answer.

Again, I want to remind you that Satan/Lucifer comes as an angel of light. Scripture describes him as being extraordinarily beautiful:

“You were the model of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.”
— Ezekiel 28:12

And:

“And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.”
— 2 Corinthians 11:14

Something can appear beautiful, peaceful, loving and enlightened and still lead you away from God.

So, How Can We Use Crystals Safely?

Hopefully, I haven't scared you too much about crystals. There is a way to appreciate them safely and, from my perspective, to use them in a way that keeps God at the centre.

1. Use them for decorative or mineralogical purposes

You can simply appreciate crystals for their natural beauty, geological formation and mineralogical properties.

This means not using them for spiritual purposes such as manifestation, intention-setting, spells, crystal grids, protection or other practices that place spiritual trust in the crystal itself.

2. Come to Jesus and God

You can come to Jesus and God and ask Him that the crystal only opens the door to Him.

If this is an earnest prayer, it is not accomplished through your own righteousness or efforts. It is done because of the nature of God—merciful, compassionate, kind, generous and gracious, but also full of authority.

This is faith.

3. Hold or wear crystals with your focus on God

If you choose to hold or wear a crystal, let your intention be to come into God's presence or the presence of Jesus, rather than looking to the crystal itself to provide something for you.

The crystal is not the source. God is.

4. Pray over crystals

Some crystals may have been used in the past for purposes that you would now consider spiritually inappropriate. For this reason, I personally pray over crystals and ask God to purify them.

Again, remember that it is God, through His righteousness, compassion and grace, who answers our prayers. It is not through our own efforts or deeds.

Have faith and pray to Him.

The Crystals at Crystal Meditation NZ

All the crystals at our store have been prayed over in full faith.

I have prayed that any crystal, stone or glass that I have ever sold or given away, and any that will be sold or given away in the future, will be purified by the Blood of Jesus, and that any access to the spiritual realm other than to God's Kingdom and the Kingdom of Jesus will be shut down and cut off.

Navigating Crystal Energy

Because I am an energy-sensitive individual and could physically feel different energies from stones and crystals, this is actually why I started this store in the first place. Now that I know what I know, I became especially confused about why I could still feel these energies from stones. I prayed and prayed to God for wisdom on this topic. I even asked Him to take away my sensitivity if it was purely a form of deception. That was a painful thing to pray for, because this sensitivity was something I had experienced for so long and had built much of my understanding around.

After perhaps one or two weeks of praying, I came to a realisation that felt aligned with God. Crystals are simply a representation or reflection of the characteristics of God's Kingdom—or perhaps, in some small way, a reflection of God's creativity and personality.

The problem was not necessarily that I could perceive something in the crystals. The problem was where I placed my trust. I had been looking to the crystal itself to align me with certain qualities, rather than looking to God. I was putting my trust in God's creation rather than in God Himself. That distinction changed everything for me.

So although I still feel these energies from stones and crystals, I now choose to see them differently. They are reminders of God's grace, love, peace and beauty. They are reminders of God’s qualities and God’s Kingdom. They are not the source of those things.

This is also why I am currently working on changing the descriptions of the crystals in my store. I want the language I use to reflect what I now believe—that the beauty and qualities we see in creation can point us back towards the Creator, rather than causing us to place our trust in creation itself.

How Did Crystals Become Associated With Witchcraft?

Like many things created by God, crystals can be hijacked and used for purposes that lead people away from Him. We tend to lean on crystals for help when we should be leaning on God.

Because they do open us to the spiritual realm and energy-sensitive people discovered this, they started using them for spiritual purposes isolated from God because we have forgotten or have turned away from God due to religion. Jesus never wanted a religion, he wanted us to love. “This is my command: Love each other.”— John 15:17

There are also interesting biblical examples of stones being used to hold, represent or carry something sacred. The twelve stones of the High Priest's breastplate represented the twelve tribes of Israel, while the two stone tablets given to Moses were literally inscribed by the finger of God with His commandments (Deuteronomy 9:10). And in Zechariah 3:9–10, God gives a stone to Joshua the high priest as a sacred symbol “See, the stone I have set in front of Joshua! There are seven eyes (facets) on that one stone, and I will engrave an inscription on it,” declares the LORD Almighty, “and I will remove the sin of this land in a single day.

Though these passages do not explicitly teach that crystals store spiritual energy or frequency, they do show a recurring biblical pattern of stones being used to hold, represent, commemorate or communicate something from God.

Perhaps this is part of what has been distorted over time: the idea that crystals themselves possess power independent from God, rather than understanding them as part of God's creation and allowing them to point us back toward Him.

The problem is not the stone.

The problem comes when we place our trust in the stone instead of the Creator.

Concluding Remarks

Perhaps those who have been hurt by Christianity will be turned off by my use of the Bible and my mention of God. I understand that.

But after many years of exploring spirituality, I have come to understand God very differently from the way I once did. I have come to know God as love, truth, goodness and pure light—and I have also learned that not everything presented as “light” is necessarily true.

This is why I now approach crystals differently.

For those who feel drawn to crystals and want to use them as part of their spiritual journey, I encourage you to approach them with discernment. Don't give them power that belongs to God. Instead, allow their beauty to remind you of the Creator and use them to draw your heart toward truth, wisdom, and the love of God.

As working with crystals has done for me, may they bring you closer to untainted truth and the true light and wisdom of God.

May these beautiful creations never become a substitute for God, but instead simply point us back toward Him.
